In this video, Joshua Hardwick introduces three actionable ways to find (and steal) Google featured snippets in the SERPs.

Here are the three strategies covered in this video:

– find owned featured snippets (then optimize them for more clicks)
– find low-hanging featured snippet opportunities (then STEAL them)
– find competitor-owned featured snippets (then STEAL those, too!)

If you’re unsure as to what a “featured snippet” is, try Googling something like “how to make pizza dough.” This will return a bunch of results, with a “featured snippet” in the top position.

Featured snippets show up in different forms. A few common examples include answer boxes, quick answers, and sometimes even calculators.

You can identify a featured snippet because it will provide an answer to your query directly in the search results. It also sits in a neat box at the top of Google search results which stands out from the rest of the organic search results.

Because featured snippets pull information from third-party websites (and send traffic to the featured website), it’s worth trying to “claim” featured snippets for relevant, popular terms.

Featured Snippets are the boxed answers you see at the top of Google for some searches, normally informational searches. If you search for “what is a stocks and shares isa” then you’ll get a text-box with the answer. If you search for “how to tie a tie” then you’ll see a video Featured Snippet. When you search for “best live casinos” then you’ll get a table Featured Snippet which lists the details for each casino.

Owning the website which features in the Featured Snippet position is highly beneficial as you’ll have more visibility than the other websites linked beneath it due to the space the Featured Snippet takes up. It makes it more likely that you website will be clicked on, but (depending on the completeness of the answer) it may mean that people read the answer and don’t visit your website.

Given the upsides and downsides, it’s best to make sure your website features in the Featured Snippet rather than your competitor, so fighting for the Featured Snippets your related search queries have is paramount and should be a priority in your search marketing strategy.

Learn how to get the featured snippet using Google predictive text (Smart Compose). This is only available to Google Docs Workspace users, so if you don’t have Workspace, you can use Gmail instead.

To get the bold words, copy the second script on this page:

Steps:

1) Go to this link: https://gist.github.com/PabloRosales/534fdaa24d0197348af01ec2fc3af731

2) copy the script and create a bookmarklet (bookmark any site, copy the script beneath “google-organic-bold.js” and replace the bookmark’s URL field with script you copied (beneath “google-organic-bold.js”).

3) Make a bookmark (any page) and replace the URL field with that script (google-organic-bold.js).

4) Paste those into a Google doc. or a Gmail compose window.

5) Start writing the snippet and try to let Google guide you. Try to let Google complete as much of the snippet as you can.

The idea is that if a sentence makes good semantic sense to Google, it makes sense for Google to rank it in the featured snippet!
